Overview

This 3 days Virunga gorilla safari is one of the best DR Congo safaris which will take you through the Virunga Massif to visit the rare mountain gorillas. Virunga national park is one of a few national parks in the world where you can trek mountain gorillas and it's ranked and known to have the cheapest gorilla trekking permits.

There is more to explore including bird species, vegetation, beautiful landscapes as well the big mammals like antelopes, elephants, lions and forest hogs. You will also visit some of the city-based attractions in Kigali Rwanda such as genocide memorial center, craft markets, the art center and much more.

Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Virunga National Park from Kigali, Rwanda

Pick up from any agreed point in Rwanda and particularly Kigali city by your professional driver / guide who will take you through guidelines and what you expect to see while on this short tour to the mighty Virunga national park.

You will straight away drive towards eastern DR Congo and this is where the park is located. Pass at the border of Goma where you will go through the immigration procedures and in case you don’t have some travel documents, the guide driver will help you to acquire some and then find your way to the lodge/hotel.

Day 2: Gorilla trekking adventure

Begin the day filled with beauty and joy as you head out to trek the remaining endangered mountain gorillas. This experience will commence with breakfast and later a short drive to the park office for a briefing where guidelines will be well speculated such as not feeding wildlife, keeping a distance of 7 meters from a family of gorillas, not using flashlight cameras and much more.

Start the experience with the guidance of the park ranger while following their footprints, nests and their voices. Upon locating the gorilla family trekked, you will follow gorillas for an hour and this will create everlasting memories. After, trek back to the offices where you will meet the safari guide-driver that will take you back to the lodge for leisure since the overall experience can take about 2 to 6 hours while in the forest.

Day 3: Transfer back to Kigali, Rwanda and departure

Leave early in the morning after breakfast and transfer to Rwanda, crossing through Goma border if time allows or depending on your flight time, have a short city tour in Kigali where you will encounter places like genocide memorial center, local markets, craft / art centers and then taste on the local dishes. Be dropped off at Kigali international airport and this will be the end of your tour to Virunga national park, D.R. Congo.
